Myanmar is looking to capitalise on a recent tourism rebound and stimulate more investment in the sector, following efforts to improve access to credit for smaller operators.

Myanmar’s tourism sector performed strongly in the first half of 2017; however, concerns over internal conflict have raised questions over investment and visitor numbers in the near future.

Growing brand awareness, combined with investments in infrastructure, will drive development in Myanmar’s tourism industry this year and beyond, with record high inbound traffic forecast for 2016.

Growing international interest in Myanmar, following the easing of sanctions by the West, has led to a period of unprecedented growth in the tourism industry and has seen visitor numbers soar to 2m last year from 300,000 in 2010, according to governmental data.
International arrivals in Myanmar topped 1m in 2012, up an impressive 30% from the year before. The country, which was recently voted the “top travel destination” by readers of the British magazine Wanderlust, is also attracting the attention of international hotel chains.
The tourism industry in Myanmar stands to be one of the key winners from the country’s bid to open up economically and politically, following a remarkable two-year period in which international sanctions against the Southeast Asian state were eased.
