With a combination of extreme summer drought and severe winter chill taking its toll on Mongolia’s livestock industry, the country is looking to financial incentives and targeted investment to bolster regional exports.

Strong demand at home and abroad could prompt higher investment in Mongolia’s dairy industry as the country strives to return to self-sufficiency in milk, as well as capitalise on export potential in the region.

Mongolia is bracing itself for a colder-than-average winter following a harvest that, while strong, failed to meet agricultural targets. Severe weather conditions are raising fears of a dzud, otherwise known as a summer drought and severe winter, which in previous years decimated Mongolia’s herds and sent agricultural output spiralling.
Although Mongolia’s agriculture sector is feeling the benefits of new management approaches and seeing intensified production thanks to technological advances, it is still struggling to overcome issues created by under-investment and a transition from a planned to a market economy.
As the agriculture sector prepares for winter, a major export deal with China and improvements in trade relations with Russia are heating up prospects for Mongolia’s meat industry.
