After 18 months of travel restrictions, a number of countries in South-east Asia have begun opening their borders to foreign visitors to stoke recovery in their respective tourism industries.

Infrastructure and tourism-related programmes will be among the beneficiaries of a new levy on hotel stays that Malaysia’s government is imposing to help fund expansion of the country’s tourism offering.

As part of a broad national strategy to promote itself as a prime tourism destination, Malaysia has ramped up efforts to court Chinese visitors with a series of initiatives. 

Higher tourist spending and longer holiday stays are supporting Malaysia’s efforts to reignite its tourism industry, bolstered by a more favourable exchange rate.

The tourism industry in Sarawak is in the spotlight as sporting events and cultural festivals are being showcased as part of the wider Visit Malaysia (VMY) 2014 tourism campaign. However momentum must be continued beyond this year’s festivities in order to attract further tourism revenue and investment.

A strong showing by Malaysia’s tourism industry in the first three months of the year may be offset by an expected drop-off in arrivals from China. But officials and travel bodies remain confident that any cooling in sentiment from the mainland will ease by the latter part of the year, giving the sector a lift in the final quarter.
