Railway developments are moving forward in Abu Dhabi, with the first phase of an expansive national project expected to be completed this year. A national network will decrease the emirate’s dependence on increasingly busy highways, and could be a boon to GDP growth. However, delays in scheduled passenger services will keep commuters on the highways for the next several years.
Vast stretches of desert once tracked by camel trains will soon be spanned by one of the world’s most modern and sophisticated transport systems, with Saudi Arabia now developing a countrywide rail network that underpins the government’s programme to diversify the economy.

With the ongoing expansion of the port and container terminal at Aqaba and the new terminal at the Queen Alia International Airport, there is a sense of cautious optimism in the kingdom’s transport and logistics sector.

The Kingdom strengthened its role as a hub for trans-shipment services in the Northern Gulf markets last year, buoyed by Saudi Arabia’s growing market. However, while the expansion of these services spells good news, rising demand has also produced challenges.
Public transport in Oman has been earmarked for a major funding boost under the 2013 budget, and a planned national rail network is set to receive the lion’s share of the spend. Oman’s $15bn rail network system will provide links between domestic production and logistics hubs, while supporting efforts to open up trade links across the region.
Efforts to transform Kuwait’s logistics infrastructure are gathering pace following the announcement that the first phase of the $1.2bn Mubarak Al Kabir port development is on track for completion in the second quarter of 2014.
