With a reduction in mobile tariffs forthcoming, Omani telecoms companies are looking for new ways to attract customers by offering more advanced services at lower rates. The Ministerial Committee of the GCC Council announced in early February that tariffs on calls made to GCC countries while roaming in the region would be reduced.
Saudi Arabia’s telecommunications sector is to get a major shake up this year, with up to three new operators entering the mobile phone segment, though the route they will be taking will be very different from that followed by the three existing service providers.
With the highly competitive Kuwaiti telecoms market becoming increasingly saturated, the country’s three mobile operators are jostling for position. Central to all of their strategies is a greater focus on mobile data services.
A series of ongoing development programmes in information and communications technology (ICT) have resulted in rapidly improving technology indicators across the board in Qatar. To keep that number increasing, industry players are calling for a sales tax on smartphones to be rescinded, while also launching new mobile phone-based services.

Significant progress has been made on the goals set out for Jordan’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector to reach by the end of 2011, with internet penetration rates, foreign direct investment (FDI) and revenues all increasing, even as government spending declines. Expanded plans for the sector for the 2010-16 period should be finalised by the end of this year.
