Indonesia’s robust economic growth in the years leading up to the pandemic, combined with low public debt, provided the country with a stronger cushion than in previous global crises. A range of coordinated fiscal and monetary policy tools were deployed to help alleviate some of the biggest challenges and boost liquidity. This report outlines the measures taken by Indonesia’s multifinance players to ensure business continuity – which led to rising industry revenue over the first four months of the pandemic – and identifies key segments that could aid the national recovery. With institutional support from the Financial Services Authority, increased financial technology development, digital lending and e-commerce activity will offer an opportunity for multifinance players to collaborate and expand their consumer base, as well as leverage more reliable data for credit risk assessments in the post-pandemic era.
