While Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan city and has a somewhat liberal atmosphere, it is still advisable that visitors respect local culture and norms and wear more conservative clothing, as well as customs regarding interactions between men and women. Unlike in Western countries, in the UAE Friday and Saturday are weekend days. In addition, business visitors should be aware that during the month of Ramadan regular work hours may change and any business meetings should be confirmed in advance. Although Arabic is the official language and legal documents must be written in or translated into Arabic, English is widely spoken and understood. Due to the diverse nature of the population a number of other languages are also spoken, like Hindi and Urdu. Visitors who have never travelled to the Gulf may find the weather difficult to handle, as during the summer months the temperatures remains above 40°C. Travellers are advised to remain indoors during the summer months or to go out during the night.
