General Information

Mobile phones are prevalent, with most Kenyans owning one, and top-up credit can be purchased at mobile phone shops, convenience stores and on street corners. A passport is required when buying a new SIM card. Internet access is common in city centres. A well-used public transport network of buses, known matatus, serve the capital. Marked taxis are also available in most areas of Nairobi, though it is not advised to hail one from the street. Fares are negotiable, with most journeys in the city costing around $6-9.
