2016 witnessed the launch of the Kingdom’s historic Vision 2030 and the accompanying National Transformation Programme, both of which call for a major overhaul of the state’s economic apparatus and envision a more open market framework and more dynamic, private sector-led growth moving ahead.

Strong domestic demand and the desire to conserve oil resources for export are driving reform in Saudi Arabia’s power sector.

Steps taken by national oil giant Saudi Aramco to consolidate some of its downstream assets, most notably in the US market, appear to be laying the groundwork for an initial public offering (IPO) and a move towards becoming the global leader in refining. 

 

Although gas production increased by more than 70% between 2003 and 2013 according to BP figures, harnessing its potential presents a number of challenges. Saudi Arabia has no plans to export gas, seeing it as feedstock for local power, desalination and petrochemical plants in order to free up more oil for export.
