Rising visitor numbers are supporting the growth of Indonesia’s tourism industry, and the country is now looking to tap into growing markets and develop new destinations. While tourism is an important foreign currency earner and a moderate contributor to overall GDP, it is still small compared to regional leaders Thailand and Malaysia. Its growth outlook, however, is excellent.
Despite an uncertain economic climate, the number of foreign visitors to Indonesia continues to rise and the country is looking to build on its recent success and diversify the tourism sector.
Indonesia has set ambitious targets for tourism growth this year, as the country looks to realise its potential as a leading international destination for visitors and expand an important part of the economy.
Indonesia plans to promote its natural and cultural attractions in order to reach its target of 7.6m tourist arrivals in 2011, with an emphasis on “eco-cultural” sights and activities. These are expected to attract well-heeled visitors who spend more and have less of an impact on the environment.
Indonesia’s premier tourism resort, Bali, is clicking back into gear after the global downturn slowed recovery from damaging terror attacks. In 2010, authorities are confident that increasing visitor numbers will bring greater revenues and sustainable development to the region.
