The name Bahrain means “two seas” in Arabic, referring to the seas that surround the Gulf island nation. It is unclear which seas the term specifically refers to, and for much of its history, Bahrain was the name for the province. Only recently has it come to identify the islands of the Awal archipelago.

Bahrain has remained largely insulated from international external risks and has weathered the global economic shocks of the recent past relatively well. At the height of the international financial downturn, for example, the kingdom avoided falling into recession and even achieved real GDP growth of more than 6% in 2008 and over 3% in 2009. 

While 2012 may have been marked by an ongoing political stalemate and effects from regional and local unrest, Bahrain managed to overcome negative pressures and produce solid growth for 2012.
