Electricity
The Company
Created in 1896, Empresa de Energía de Bogotá (EEB) is a utility holding with a presence in the segments of electricity generation, electricity distribution, gas transport and gas distribution in Colombia; gas distribution in Peru; and gas and electricity transmission in Colombia, Peru and Guatemala.
EEB has implemented a successful internationalisation strategy and is well positioned to continue its organic and inorganic growth in the segments of gas and electricity in Latin America.
EEB’s main shareholder is the city of Bogotá, which holds a 76.2% stake. Other significant stakes in EEB are held by Ecopetrol and Colombian pension funds.
In 2013 EEB’s net profit was COP843.6bn ($421.8m), representing a 22.1% increase compared to 2012. As of December 2013 EEB had total assets on a consolidated basis worth COP16.8trn ($8.4bn) and total shareholders equity of COP9.8trn ($4.9bn).
Electricity
In the electricity generation segment, EEB has a particular short-term interest in the privatisation of ISAGEN, one of the largest hydro and thermal electricity-generation companies in Colombia. Additionally, EEB is continually evaluating opportunities in the Colombian market to expand its already significant presence through electric power company Emgesa, which is controlled by Endesa. presence in Colombia, Peru and Guatemala. In Colombia EEB is actively pursuing opportunities in the form of public auctions for new projects held by the gov- ernment agency Unidad de Planeación Minero Energéti- ca, better known as UPME, where it mainly competes with state-owned transmission companies Interconexion Electrica (ISA) and Empresas Públicas de Medellín. In Peru EEB has a major presence through its joint participation with ISA in Red de Energía del Peru and Consorcio Transmantaro, and together they bid for new assets in the Peruvian market. In Guatemala EEB is progressing in the Transportadora de Energía de Centroamérica project (known as TRECSA) to generate, transmit, distribute and commercialise energy, including gas and all types of fuels.
In the electricity distribution segment, EEB is mainly active through its stake in Codensa (controlled by Endesa) and Empresa de Energía de Cundinamarca, the electricity distribution company covering the region around Bogotá. Potential opportunities there include the distribution companies in Huila, Nariño, Meta and Caquetá, which are yet to be privatised.
Gas
In gas transport, EEB is particularly focused on markets such as Mexico and Peru, in addition to its natural dominant position in Colombia. The company recently bid for a stake in the Transportadora de Gas del Peru gas pipeline connecting Camisea with Lima, and is exploring the possibility of participating in the auction of the South Peruvian Gas Pipeline, a $3. 5bn4bn tender by the Peruvian government.
There is a major development programme of transport infrastructure in Mexico that EEB evaluates on an ongoing basis. In Colombia EEB recently consolidated its position in Transportadora de Gas Internacional by acquiring the stake held by Citi Venture Capital International since 2009, consolidating it as one of the two largest transport companies in Colombia.
In gas distribution, EEB is focused on expanding its presence in countries such as Mexico, Brazil and Peru. These countries offer huge potential to expand residential customers’ access to natural gas as an environmentally friendly, cheap and plentiful resource.
Development Strategy
EEB continues to look for opportunities in the segments of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, and gas transport and distribution in Colombia and abroad. The company’s main focus internationally is countries such as Peru, Mexico, Chile and Brazil. EEB continues to be an active player in the regional energy sector, in which it has a major investment plan to expand. Importantly, EEB is a large utility holding in the Colombian market and has access to stable, substantial sources of funding that positions it well to implement its $7.5bn capital investment plan.
